The National Day of Prayer

Today has the distinction of being both the National Day of Prayer as well as Cinco de Mayo.  It is the perfect day to pray for a margarita.

The National Day of Prayer has gone high-tech this year.  They have this very slick website with all the bells and whistles and social media hooks to Facebook, LinkedIn, Digg, etc.  They also are on Twitter, tweeting away.

Sure, Christian leadership groups in the USA can be over-the-top sometimes, but I'm glad they're out there.national_day

This country is in a lot of trouble.  Yesterday an openly gay woman was appointed to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court - the state’s highest judicial body.  They are now saying the F-word on my son's favorite cartoon TV Show (South Park).  All over the country, drugs are being decriminalized and people are walking around the mall stoned.

You don't have to watch too many episodes of "Jersey Shore" and "RuPaul's Drag U" to begin to wonder where have all the good people gone.  The answer is that they're in the churches.  In little churches all over the country there are people running soup kitchens and taking collections for the poor and just generally doing the right thing - or at least trying to do the right thing.

Whether you are a lapsed Lutheran, a concerned Catholic, or an analytical agnostic, take a minute to visit the National Day of Prayer website site, then take 30 seconds to thank God for what you have been given.  It's probably the most important thing you will do today, and it costs less than a margarita.
